Hi everyone,

We’ve been encouraged by the overwhelming support and praise for Pacific Jewel since her maiden voyage in mid-December.

But we’re also paying close attention to those of you who have expressed your disappointment. Your feedback is helping us to identify areas where we can improve. Thank you for being so straightforward in your comments.

Please be assured, P&O Cruises welcomes all feedback and we study it very closely. We don’t shy away from constructive criticism because that’s the key to continually improving. It also helps us to deliver a better cruising experience for everyone.

But to keep with the spirit of this blog and so that everyone has an opportunity to comment on blog topics, we are going to make some changes.

We plan to update the terms and conditions allowing for posts to be moderated based on their  relevance and context. This is in addition to the current terms.

The blog wasn’t envisaged as a forum as such and there is a risk that specific views and information that we don’t want to miss can be overwhelmed among posts that aren’t on topic.

We don’t want to discourage anyone from making general comments and our facebook group is the perfect place to engaged in healthy discussion, meet people and learn valuable information from us and experienced cruisers. We ask all passengers to provide feedback on their cruise experience using our post-cruise survey.

And don’t forget that our website is full of helpful information too, especially within the Booking Terms and Conditions and the Cruise Handbook pages.

We’ll let you know in further posts how we will be improving the cruising experience and in which areas. Be assured, if you’ve written to us we will definitely be getting back to you. Thanks for your patience to date.

In the meantime, your comments continue to be welcomed but it will make it easier for us to identify areas where we can improve if you make them relevant to blog topics.

Happy cruising to all

My husband and I are coming on the Pacific Jewell in April. Was wondering is there a movie theatre on board? or what movies you are showing? is there a boot camp on the pacific jewell for a fee that you can sign up for.

  • steven

can anyone tell me whether the air conditioning in the cabins on the jewel can actually be turned off if you choose or do they remain on all the time and you can only ajust the temp?

  • steven

the reason i ask is that i went on the dawn previously and the air con remained on all the time in your room and you could only adjust the temp up or down. because the upper bunk was so close to the ceiling air con vent the air blowing out became uncomfortable at times for my son with allergetic problems.

  • Jen

Every cruise I have ever been on – 7 different ships – have always had airconditioning in cabins on all the time. Can only adjust in individual cabins, It’s been my experience – can’t turn off. Have also experienced airconditioning break down or complete turn off due to maintance on a few cruises.

  • elaine

i would like to also know if it is possible to turn down airconditioner as i have had problems with allergic problems and have gotsick on last crusies

  • LISA

Hi could you please tell me if there is late pizza burger resturant on the jewel as i cant see it on the deck plan

  • Jen

They use the showlounge for movies. Well they did on the Dawn.
Movies are in your cabin 24 x 7.
I would prefer to watch a movie in a theatre atmosphere. Don’t want to be in my cabin alot during my cruise. Only to shower, change and sleep.

  • Simmo

    Hi Lisa,
Yes there is a 24 hour snack bar attached to Plantations Buffet. Hot dogs, burgers and pizza for a small price (pizza was under $7 if I recall correctly).
Have a fun trip. I had the time of my life.
    Cheers!

  • mum n daughter

just returned from 7 nights on the Jewel and had a great time.To elaine & steven, yes you can turn aircon down, but we did’nt turn ours off dont know if you can.To lisa, yes there is a snack resturant on board where you can buy pizzas, chips ect at night but i didn’t have the need to buy as there was sooo… much food and so many choices of where to eat.

  • Jan

I went in January and there certainly was a bootcamp which was a nominal fee I believe. People were lugging great big tyres up and down stairs and doing all sorts of other things. They looked like they enjoyed it – it was fun to watch!!

Hi,we just sailed the Jewell from 23/2 to 2/3. Overall I praise the Jewell and we had a teriffic time. Still,i was surprised at some of the things that were charged for. To buy a lanyard cost $7.50 each,to carry cour cruise card and room key with. Thankfully I rang the call centre before we left, and the nice lady on the phone advised me to take my own lanyards, which i then did. I think this should be suggested in the handbook, for guests to bring their own. Also a bottle of Evian water was awaiting in our room, but as soon as this was opened or the seal broken a charge of $29.95 was to be added to aour account. As I was travelling with 2 young kids solo,I immediately put the bottle out of our reach. I thought more food items on the cruise would have been free. Whilst the Plantation buffet was great,it certainly did shut right on time. I cannot commend the kids clubs’ enough,i hardly saw my 2 children towards the end, your kids will love them. And PLEASE take out travel insurance including medical insurance. They warn you that the medical costs on boaord the Jewell’s medical centre are steep, they certainly are that. My daughter had her finger jammed in a door with her thumb being jammed which resulted in the loss of a finger nail,so 3 Xrays,2 stitches and 4 hours in the medical centre…the cost being… $1782.86!!!! thankfully we had insurance but whilct P&0 strongly encourage their guests to take out insurance,i would allmost make that mandatory. The $1782.86 simply had to come out of my on board account,I couldnt pay for it any other way..and fortunately I had enough credit to cover it. Many people also were seasick, and on talking to a few they were receiving Phenergan injections as $95 per shot, but only lasting 6-8 hours,so PLEASE think about your insurance!
It was mentioned that most shops in Noumea would accept Australian currency but with the exception of a few,we did not find this. For some reason i also could not withdraw funds,I tried to do this in 2 different ATMs in Noumea,i thought most cards were accepted worldwide now.
    Many thanks and happy cruising!

Hi all ,looking for a New Zealand cruse in November or December 2011 are there good shour tours at ports of call in New Zealand.
    Thanks Brian.

  • ANDREE

i have been on the princess lines and they seem to have the movies, bingo and afternoon tea all going at the same time. do they do the same on the pacific jewel

  • Luke

I will be on the Pacific Jewel May 29th We have booked a Mini Suit I hope that it is all its made out to be.

  • Marion

Is anyone able to tell me why the name of the cruise I am booked on for 6th September has been changed from ‘BOUNTY ADVENTURE’ to “TONGAN TREASURES’. Hopefully we will still have the reenactment of the Mutiny of the Bounty.

  • sh0gun1

hey annemarie. just got off cruise round tassy and had the time of our lives. bottle of water in your room should only cost you $3.50 not $29.95 . that cost may added up together with other items or services to your room. you should check your account out with p & o about any discrepencies. the lanyards were a bit pricey but at around $7.50 ea but at our first port of call in hobart you could finds some for $2 at the reject shop. food was great at the planatation and waterfront. shows were of 5 star quality. cruise photos were a quite steep ranging from $20 – $30 but as we were a group of eight we all chipped in to buy nine photos which we thought were the best ones taken by the many P & O photographers throughtout the cruise and I had 8 of photos reduplicated at my local camera store for $ 30. saved us hundreds.there are ways about getting round the expensive side of the cruise (except the alcohol) . awesome cruise cannot fault 1 bit . already planning next cruise. hope this helps those about head off on the cruises. enjoy and have fun.

    Hi,
We have booked the Jewl for this June.
This will be our 3rd cruise, but we are hearing alot of negative feed back about this ship, eg, food is same most nights, beds don’t get turned down, and general service is pretty poor.
Our last ships were PO Dawn and Princess Sun, both were superb.
Some feed back would be great as we might need to change our cruise!

  • Wendy

Hi can you tell me when you will have the virtual tour and some more pictures on the Jewel up and running on the web page. It would be nice to have a look at it & get a feel for the ship before i go on my first cruise in July. :-)

    Thanks Wendy

  • charmaine

    Hey everyone,
My hubby and I are on Pacific Jewel this coming April for 11 nights. We are getting concerned with the negative feedback on various sites. This will be my 4th cruise, and my husband’s 1st. I would hate this cruise to be a disappointment for my husband, as I am desperately trying to get him hooked!!!!!! Can anyone give me some feedback about their overall experiences, whether it be positive OR negative. Cheers!

  • Lee Blackmore

Booked on Jewel march 28, havent even started the holiday and am over it!! we are a family of 5, and required to book 2 rooms to accommodate us…unfortunately they have allocated us on 2 seperate floors…and are now advising us there is nothing they can do about it. we have 3 young children and find this situation unacceptable. They chose to upgrade one of the rooms and leave the other…..commonsense….obviously not on board this ship.

  • MICHAEL LEA

    Hi,
My wife and i have recently got back from cruise on the Pacific Jewel around tasmania. 8days march. This was our first voyage,we did enjoy it but spoke to other passengers who informed us that this was not the best of p&o ships they had been on.we did find it to be very overcrowded.During meal times we had to queue for ages ,then had to fight for a seat to sit down and eat it.The tours we booked up for were in my opinion overpriced and did not live upto expectations.!! I believe it would be better to use the shuttle bus provided free of charge at each port and use taxis or public transport and do your own private tours. TRIVIA !! seemed to be the main activity onboard each day,and if your not into it then there didnt seem to be much else to do. The library on board was crap.!! If you wanted to use the internet you needed to be a millionare. The shows I found to be nothing to write home about,My kids could perform better than some of them. After 10.oclock pm if you wanted a cup of tea/coffee you had to buy it.!! Why dont they supply a jug in the cabins so that passengers can make one anytime they desire.??? My advice to anyone going on the Jewel to change to another ship as I would not cruise on this one ever again.

Hi Lee, we’re sorry for the inconvenience, that is indeed very unfortunate. If you wish to provide feedback about a post cruise issue please phone our Customer Relations department on 1800 127 384 or email on cust.relations@carnivalaustralia.com

  • Wendy

Hi could someone please tell me why does an error code come up on the cruise personliser everytime i try to book my shore tours. My shore tours werent on my cruise personliser up until about two weeks ago and ever since they have been there i have tryed to book my shore tours, it lets me go through it all and when i click the save and continue a error code comes up all the time and i dont know why this is as i thought that as soon as the shore tours were in your cruise personliser you were able to book the shore tours that you want, but i cant. Thanks in advance :-)

    Cheers Wendy

  • Charmaine

Hey just wondering if there is anyone travelling on April 26th?
Currently I am driving my friends up the wall with my cruise countdown!!!!!………………………Jealousy is a curse if you ask me!!!!
Can anyone give me any feedback in regards to the hair salon onboard jewel,……….is it hard to book on formal nights etc?
I’d appreciate any information in regards to this. ……….Bring on the 26th April!!!!!!!!!

  • Charmaine

Sorry, me again!!!!! I forgot to comment on just how polite the customer relations team were on responding to some of these complaints. I don’t know how much people expect for what their actually paying for. No one’s forcing people to sit and watch these shows on board. Most people would also be aware that prices are going to be a little more pricey as far as the internet on board goes.
People,…..wake up and actually take the time to work out the value for money. God, a taxi fare from the airport to my house can cost almost just as much as what P&O are charging per day for three meals a day, entertainment, fuel and accomodation. It almost seems as though people arent happy unless their complaining. There are pleanty of people who would dearly love to enjoy their up and coming cruise experience, and would appreciate SOME positive feedback. Maybe these people complaining failed to actually get off the ship during many ports,……..if they did, then they would’ve seen the poverty in some of these fijian villiages…………..how serious are your complaints now people? …………and for the people looking forward to their future cruises,…….I wish you a very memorable time.
    CHEERS.

  • John

Hey Charmaine, we, that is wife and I will be on the 26th April cruise look forward to meeting you. Do you know if there is an on board meet and great organised or something? bring it on all positive this end!!

  • http://PJ Owen

    Happy Cruiser,

Returned on PJ on the 28MAR10 and this was our first time cruise.
I must say I really don’t understand a lot of people. We had nothing to compare with so we took it as it came.
The cruise was excellent. The crew, meals, shows were very good. Never experienced any waiting in lines and was not disappointed with any part of the cruise.
If this is the worst P&O can provide their certainly in the right business

  • Charmaine

Hey john, so good to hear that you guys are on the same cruise as my hubby and I. I’m not too sure whether or not they do a meet and greet, but if you like kareoke at all,…..I’m sure we’ll run in to each other!!!!!! SOOOOooooooo glad to hear some positive feedback from people.
OWEN, so glad you enjoyed your trip,……how was the weather?
I am still counting the days til we leave,……….the 26th just wont arrive soon enough!!!!!!!!
Still waiting to see if anyone can give me any information in regards to the hairdressing salon on board. My hubby and I will be renewing our wedding vows on board the jewel,……not sure what day yet,……but would like to know hair prices etc !!!!!
    PLEASE,….any info would be helpful.
John,……look forward to chatting again over the next few day’s,…..let’s make the day’s go faster for one another!!!

    CHEERS!!!

  • http://PJ Owen

Charmaine, the weather was great, nice and calm and plenty of sunshine. We really had a great cruise, didn’t have to try too hard as there was always plenty to do. Just a tip, we booked into the “Waterfront” for dinner everynight and even ended up having breakfast and lunch there.
The meals were of a high class and the service was excellent. We did a tour of the galley area where they cook the meals for the whole ship and this was really a great eye opener and one not to miss. In fact all the activities we attended were well organised and it’s just a matter of doing what you can fit in.

    Have a great cruise………

  • P&O Cruises

    Hi Wendy

We’ve spoken with members of the Company and there doesn’t appear to be a known problem. If you are still experiencing difficulty, and if you haven’t already done so, could you spare a few moments to contact our Telephone Sales and Service team on 13 24 94 to determine if there is a system issue or if there is something specific we need to look at. We are open from 7am until 8pm Monday to Friday and Saturday, from 8am until 5pm (AEST).

During this same phone call if you are still unable to book the shore tours you want via Cruise Personaliser, our Cruise Consultant will be able to book these for you. Hope this helps :)

  • Wendy

Thanks for that ive tryed booking them again just not that long ago but its still coming up with an error code so ill definately give them a ring tommorrow, again thanks for the response, looking forward to my first cruise on the Jewel.

    Cheers Wendy :-)

  • Charmaine

    Hey Owen,
thank’s for the tip in relation to waterfront restaurant,…….will definately try this out. Here’s hoping that our cruise will be just as calm with great weather!!!!!
You guy’s must me bummed that ya holiday is over,…….will ya look at booking another cruise in the future?
Take it easy,…..and I’ll be sure to post a note when we return on the 7th May. May need a few days to recover first!!!!!!!

  • John

Charmaine, only 15 days now. I’m not a great karaoke participant, but don’t mind to give my applause!!! Looking forward to my favourite cocktail, ‘white lady’ we sampled plenty on the Dawn last year. OK we will have to organise a meet & greet get together. The P&O facebook site lists about 50+RSVP to our cruise!!! I also remember a few others on this site that r going on the same cruise. 15 days to arrange some thing.

  • Sharon

Hi We are going on 26th April, husband, me, four children two friends and their two children CAN”T WAIT…….

  • Barbara & girls

    Hi all,
I was wondering if someone could tell me how long before your cruise do the shore tours come up on your personaliser? I am going on the Jewel on 19th October and keep checking my personaliser but no shore tours are showing….
There are 5 of us girls going and we want to make sure we all get together on the tours…I have heard if you don’t all book at the same time you can be split up into different groups for the tours….
    Hope someone can help…
    Barbara

  • http://PacificJewelblog Kay

Once I pay my finals you can go into shore tours and pick what you want to do then I ring Sydney and tell them what tours I want and find out the times they depart the ship and book them there and then. This way I know they have made a note of it and my tickets have always been in the cabin when I board. You pay for them at the end of your cruise.

  • Amanda

I have just come back from a 10 night cruise with my family and another family and we had an absolute ball. This was the best holiday we have had we could not fault anything. The food, the entertainment, the bar staff and the rest of the crew went above and beyond what we expected. Before I went I quite offen went on this blog to see what people were saying as we had never been on a cruise before so to all the wingers pull your heads in. P&O put on a great holiday and staff their ships extremely well. Thanks for a great holiday we are already talking about going again! ! ! !

  • JJay

Hi Charmaine – I booked the hairdresser on our cruise on the Jewel last week – she was lovely and did a great job! Just drop into the Spa area as soon as you are on board and they will book you in on whichever day and time you want. Maybe a facial as well???We had an offer of 20% off if you booked on the first day, but then later there was a fabulous “20/20/20″ intoductory offer ( 20minutes of each thing) of facial, massage and foot treatment for half the usual cost, so ask about that too. Hope you enjoy the cruise. Just crash diet for the next week as you will have so much delicious food around you once on board!

  • Maureen Marett

Hi everyone, We are going on 26th April as well. We have been on several cruises so we are looking forward to the Jewel. It will be a real break for us as we are foster carers and really need the rest. See you there, not long now.

  • Maureen Marett

Hi, is the Waterfront the main restaurant on board. We like to be served as we are busy people and this is such a luxury for us. We have been on the Dawn and Sun so we are really looking forward to a different ship.

  • Maureen Marett

Hi John, I like to watch karaoke but not participate. We will be on the cruise on 26th April, Brian my husband and myself Maureen.

  • matthew

the Waterfront is the main “free” restaurant on board. deck 7 aft. You have to book for dinner each night ( 6 and 8pm timeslots) but walk in for brekky and lunch. the have the same menu each night ( 6 entrees and 6 mains to choose from) but also have 3-4 specials of each on a nightly basis. if you wish you can pay a surcharge of $ 30 pp and eat at the salt grill restaurant

  • Betty

About to book cruise in May. You all sound very young, are there
any oldies (sixties plus) on board? Sounds like there are a lot of younger families and children – am I right?

  • Michelle Vaina

I booked a hoilday with P&O Cruises leaving Sydney on 17th August. I am dissapointed after recieving a phone call 3 weeks prior to departure that the tour to Amdee Island Discovery Dive) has been cancelled. I booked this trip for 8 of us a year ago based on the tours offered (diving & snorkling) on the Pacific Islands. The highlight of our trip now cancelled. THe gentleman who called me said he was just asked to pass the message on. I couldn’t believe what l was hearing, still today l am still so so disappointed with P&O Cruises for the lack of service and way l was advised. No dive for my dad and l , no trip to Amdee Island for my family the highlight of our cruise.
I was at work when l recieved the call on my mobile when l got home l contacted P&O . I said l do not accept this and told them l was so disappointed. They said they would get back to me. THe following day l still hadn’t heard back. I then contacted them and they told me there was nothing they could do. His advice was to goggle and try to book a trip privately. I told him l would rather book through P&O. I’m still dissapointed today with the lack of care from P&O staff. I thought customer service would be a priority. (This is my second cruise with P&O)

  • P&O Cruises

    Hi Michelle,

Thank you for flagging this with us – we’ve followed this up with shore operations and our customer relations team and can now provide you with a clear reason for your shore tour cancellation.

Amadee Island is a very popular shore tour in Noumea and as a result the island is undergoing much needed maintenance work. Access is only available to operators three days a week and unfortunately dives have been cancelled as the EU law prohibits diving unless there is a Dive master present.

We can offer you other dive tours at Port Vila (another destination on your cruise) which you will able to access in your cruise personaliser for the next two days:
Introductory Dive – The Twin Bommies
    Introductory Dive – Konada Reef
Certified Dive – The Twin Bommies
    Certified Dive – Konada Wreck

We also have a number of snorkelling tours available:
    Pango Cove Advanced Snorkel
    Semi-Submersible and Snorkel
    Coral Explorer Jetboat and Snorkel
    Glass Bottom Boat and Snorkel
    Dreamcove Sail and Snorkel

Places are limited on some of the dives and we would recommend accessing your cruise personaliser within the next two days, in order to have access to the tours and prior to boarding when places can be limited.

Please let us know if we can provide anything further.

    Thanks,

    P&O Cruises

With the Cruise Personaliser, if we have booked can we change our minds and take our names off the list
