Food & Wine Cruise

Hello From Josh,

You may know me as the Inaugural Cruise Director of Pacific Jewel, Pacific Dawn and from my time on Pacific Sun and Star.  As I mentioned last month, it has been my great pleasure to welcome our new Cruise Director, Paul, on board and he is already making people laugh and smile on board.  It has also been a privilege to assume the role of Hotel Director as Simon makes his way to the Hunter Valley for a well-deserved holiday.  It is difficult to start this blog as there has been so many delectable events on board with our Food & Wine Cruise over the weekend and an enourmous amount of excitement surrounding our current Inaugural voyage to New Zealand but I will start with what is closest to most of your hearts…food.

Most of you have already heard about Salt, by Luke Mangan, the first Celebrity Chef Dining Experience in Australian cruising, many of you have even enjoyed this on board but Luke surprised us all, again, with an amazing, six course, Degustation Dinner on Sunday Night.  Paired with fine  wine, Luke personally prepared and presented Wagyu bresaola,  Kingfish carpaccio, his renowned Crab omelet, fresh Barramundi and dijon and herb crust Sirloin.  As if that wasn’t enough, Luke finished the experience with his tantalizing liquorice parfait and, yes, it was, really that amazing.  Luke was so gracious as to offer Sesame Seed Ahi Tuna to everyone whom attended his hilariously entertaining Culinary Demonstration, earlier in the afternoon; I’ll admit, I had two, myself.

Courtesy of Captain Paoletti, we enjoyed sunny skies and calm seas, under which everyone was invited up to the open deck for a Seafood Extravaganza where Prawns, Crab, Scallops and Oysters, just to name a few, were sizzling on the grills as we soaked up the sun and enjoyed live music in the company of friends and family.  It was nice to be outside but easy to convince everyone to join us inside after for the Wine tastings and Master Classes from leading wine makers from Margan Family Wines and Glandore Estate Wines.  Many people also enhanced their understanding of Coffee with our on board Baristas and Industry expert Tony Durante of Nestle during his Appreciation classes.  In case you are thinking: “What about a nice Beer,” you need not worry as Kevin Hardman of Bluetongue, presented multiple tasting and informational sessions as well.

Of course, in addition to all of the amazing culinary events, we also presented an exciting line up of Entertainment which started with our amazing Sailaway Party from Darling Harbour, featuring Pacific Cirque’s “SYZYGY.”  The most amazing moments were captured while the ship’s mast cleared the Harbour bridge by only meters and our aerialists  looked as though they could touch the passing traffic whom couldn’t resist honking and waving, to which, we certainly responded with the ships whistle.  And to top it all off, we enjoyed a fireworks display while passing the Sydney Opera House; the experience was exhilarating.

Everyone enjoyed our new Production Shows, Fine Musicians, Late Night Adult Sit Down Comedians, first run movie features and, certainly, our traditional schedule of events, activities and entertainment but we couldn’t just leave the show at that, it wouldn’t be our style.  As one of Australia’s leading Jazz performers, Neilson Gough took to the candle-lit stage in the  three-level Atrium Saturday night in a fusion of romantic, energetic and playful sounds that only a master of song and music can; thank you Neilson and to the fabulous Jewel band as well.

I am sure that those of you whom joined us over the weekend, enjoyed as much as you wished and I hope that you are equally as excited about our upcoming voyages highlighting the best in Leisure, Comedy and, of course, Food & Wine on board the growing fleet of Australian Superliners.  As we prepare to enter the Fjordlands this morning, I cannot wait to see what Paul has to say about our Inaugural visit to New Zealand in a few days.  See you soon.

Just travelled on PJ during the 3 night cruise and have to agree with every thing Josh has written. My husband, two children and I had a fantastic time and couldnt think of a better way to spend the weekend. The fireworks display as we set off was just the beginning of what we knew was going to be a GREAT holiday. I would like to say a special thank you to the friendly crew, especially SUKO who made us feel very welcome and since this was our first cruise answered all our questions with a smile each time.
The food was great, the entertainment was fantastic, shopping was fun, cabins were beautifully cleaned and even though we were suffering from sea sickness on the third day a special mention to the nursing staff who made everything so much better.
    A hoilday to remember !!!

You must be joking or at the very least not listening to what the passengers are saying. We have just got off this tub after 13 very long days onboard. to a person, everyone we spoke with agreed that this is the worst cruise ship ever to set ot from Australia and by some distance. We were hearded like sheep at every port and from and to the very limited entertainment. Ship staff didn’t care about customer complaint….. in fact they don’t even have a process to make a complaint on board. The staff advise to ring P&O when on land…. I kid you not.
This was by far the poorest way to spend $10,000 that you can imagine…

lets see if this makes the web page….

Thank you Michael for the truth. Everyone rubbished me for pointing this out. What else did you find wrong?

  • Pam

    Hi Michael,
Was there nothing good on the cruise? We are going on our first on the Jewel 10th March. What made it so bad? Does anyone know what the weather is like in March around the Pacific Islands?

A direct member of my family just did the NZ cruise on the Pacific Jewel. She totally enjoyed all the shore visits in NZ, but as to the ship and its crew, she was sadly disappointed – having had excellent times on the old Fairstar and Pacific Sun.

The ship did not appear to be ready for service, and the crew seemed not one bit interested in the normal P&O service. She expressed great disappointment at P&O and Pacific Jewel and said she would warn people not to go on this ship if she is asked.

I cant believe that P&O normally gives such good service, but on this occasion really let themselves down – let alone the passengers.

It seemed that most passengers were glad to get off the ship.

    Regards

going on the 23 Feb cruise, Please tell me there is someone out there who enjoyed it from start to finish. Taking 9 yo girl and 15 yo boy, any tips on their chances of having a good time.

  • Jan

We did!! Did not experience any of the problems written in this blog. We had no queues for any of the restaurants and not for the tenders going to shore – we were straight on. Your children will have a ball. I took my son when he was 12 and again at 16. He is now married and still recalls the great time that he had cruising. We had fantastic entertainment on our cruise in January and most attentive crew. I truly cannot understand the complaints. We have had 7 cruises with all sorts of cruise lines across the globe and enjoyed this one more than most. Just go intending to enjoy and you will.

I have just returned from the NZ cruise on The Jewel. I had a fantastic time. The entertainment was good and the food was great. This boat is exactly the same as The Dawn except for the decor. The Dawn is decked out mostly in blue and The Jewel’s decor is brown. I think you could call it autumn tones. The one thing I will say is that the Dawn is a lot more attractive. I found the brown/orange colour scheme not to be condusive with cruising. I do not know who was responsible for choosing the carpet. It can only be described as awful. It is a jungle theme with giraffe spots and zebra stripes. The first thing I said when I got on The Jewel was “are we going on a cruise or a safari”. The colour scheme makes the whole ship dark. She really needs to be brightened up. That is just a personal opinion. On the other hand The Waterfront Restaurant is very nicely decorated and the food of a high standard. The service I received was just excellent and Christian our cabin steward was first rate. We slipped him a little extra when we left. I didn’t have any trouble getting on and off the boat at the ports. On the whole we had a very nice holiday. If you go with a positive attitude you will have a good time. I know I did.

  • Pam

Thank goodness for the positive feedback. How can people go on the same boat and come back with different attitudes. Its got to be all about high expectations and a need to see the negative in things instead of the good things. Thanks again Deborah. I’m on my first cruise in 21 sleeps and going in with the intention of having a ball no matter what. I do think its important though to listen to all feedback as you can learn some useful tips and hints.

Hi Pam,we did the 3 night cruise it was great,i find people who have been on several cruises will find faults.I have cruise 11 times and yes the Jewel has its faults, hop on and enjoy yourself.

  • Nick and Ann

We are going on the Pacific jewel on 10 March and really looking forward to it. we went on a weekend wine and food cruise and looooved it! Cabin was great and the crew were fantastic. Pacific in March should be great. we did it once a few years ago. Rained a couple of days. People comparing her to Fairstar!! What are they thinking. This is soooo much better!

  • Kathy

Hi, I was on the Jewel for the Feb NZ cruise and agree with the above comment re decor and once I stopped comparing my first cruise to this one I settled in to what she had to offer. The Cirque Show was brilliant and the Entertainers/Staff were highly professional in their brilliant entertainment.
The Bingo was fun with Jemma and Roxy and was highly patronised, the prize money was worth the ‘eyes down’ dib dab dob. Never won enjoyed and cheered those who did.
The Waterfront Restaurant was lovely, good food, good service and lovely ambience.
The Cabin Steward who looked after my cabin was a delight and highly professional in his daily duties. The cabin was serviced twice daily and his towel oragami on the bed was half the pleasure of returning after going ashore.
For those who are going to travel on the Jewel in the future remember this is your holiday and therefore you need to make it what you want.
My opinion or anyone else’s does not count.
    Enjoy.

Josh or other PJ crew members – is there any chance of getting the “Cloudy Lime and Chicken Soup” recipe from the La Luna restaurant? We sailed on the New Years Eve cruise and this particular dish was one of the most amazing meals we experienced onboard. I guess this request is a little weird, but worth asking the question.
